“During this period we have seen Dementia Friends step forward to offer a ray of sunshine, hope and love to those living with Dementia.”

Ready to feel inspired? West Rainton and Leamside Dementia Friendly Community have been inspiring us all year round. Of course, the impact coronavirus has had on their activities as a community has been huge, but they’ve remained determined to reach their community in alternative ways, continuing to provide an amazing amount of support to those who need it most.

“We knew straight away that our delivery of activities and services had to stop to protect the older adults who attended, but our connection and communication to those living with dementia, their carers and family didn’t have to stop.”

In the past 12 months as part of their involvement with the Village Partnership they have supported the distribution of over 3000 free meals for older adults and those living with dementia, distributed beautiful flower pots to doorsteps, gifted lifelike ‘pets’ to Care Home residents who were missing visits, and posted pictures drawn by young Dementia Friends through the doors of those isolating, to remind them they weren't alone and to brighten up their windows.

But it doesn't stop there - they also set up a tapas delivery service for people affected by dementia, delivered 160 Elf Christmas Cards designed by children to older adults who were isolating and continued to create Dementia Friends across the community – and that's just some of the amazing support they’ve been able to offer!

Huge thanks to West Rainton and Leamside Dementia Friendly Community for all you have been doing to keep up connections with those in the community and spread happiness when it’s been needed the most.
