We've reached day four of Dementia Action Week and the inspiring stories keep on coming!

Whilst visiting his mother, Ken Johnson started to take action to help not some of the other residents in the care home to live well with dementia.

Here's Ken's story:

'My mother who is living with dementia moved into a care home nearly 12 months ago. Her wing contains people at various stages and degrees of dementia. I visit regularly and tend to spend Saturday mornings there and over the course of many months I have built up relationships with other people living with my mother.

I noticed one lady, Eva, liked her newspapers and, as I usually take my mother a newspaper, I decided to add an extra one for Eva. It was such a joy to see Eva's face when I gave her her first newspaper. Eva couldn't thank me enough. I now ask Eva about the headlines on the paper which she reads out which then engages the other people in the lounge.

I started to notice that when I was giving Eva the paper, Maisie was taking more and more of an interest. So I added an extra paper for my next visit. Same thing happened with Maisie when I gave her her first newspaper - a look of joy and couldn't thanks me enough. I now call it my paper round. Magazine for mum, Daily Express for Eva and Daily Mirror for Maisie. For approximately £2.00 this small gesture brings a lot of joy to the recipients and also fosters engagement.

How has becoming a Dementia Friend helped you?
Dementia Friends awareness helped in a way that I feel I know how to deal with people living with dementia and I can relate with them.
